June 11, 2008 Special Edition: Rick Lass for PRC District 3

Dear Green,

At our state nominating convention, held June 7 at the Commons in Santa Fe, we drafted and nominated Rick Lass to be our candidate for Public Regulation Commission, district 3. The PRC licenses and regulates all corporations doing business in New Mexico, including utility companies, transportation companies, and insurance companies. No one living or visiting this state is not affected by decisions and policies of the PRC. District 3 includes the city of Santa Fe and the northern half of the county, Los Alamos, most of Rio Arriba, Taos, and points north and east.

Rick has been involved with the Greens since 1995, serving in various party leadership roles, as a candidate for state legislature, and most recently as a director of Voting Matters, which along with the Green Party, led the drive to enact Ranked Choice Voting and Public Financing of Santa Fe's municipal elections. Rick is committed to running a strong campaign that will focus on Green issues and especially the issue of what is the proper role of corporations in our society and how we can reverse the trend of increasing corporate power over the lives of everyday New Mexicans.

For Rick to appear on the ballot in November, we need to gather almost 1400 valid petition signatures, and to qualify for public financing, we need to collect 260 valid $5 'qualifying contributions'. All this needs to happen by TUESDAY, JUNE 24. In addition, we can raise up to $5000 in 'seed money', in contributions not to exceed $100 each.

This is an excellent opportunity for Greens to be raising important issues about the function of government. Please show your support for this campaign by helping with petitioning, donating $5 or more, and committing to working on the campaign between now and November. This could be a watershed election year, including the election of a Green to a partisan office with real power in New Mexico. The pendulum is swinging back our way, are we ready to act on that momentum?

Please contact the campaign at ricklass@newmexico.com or 505-920-0540.

Copies of the petition, qualifying contribution form, and map of the district will be provided upon request. The map can be seen at www.prc.state.nm.us. Petitions and qualifying contribution affidavits can be found at www.sos.state.nm.us as well, but we would be happy to email you forms that are ready to go. Signers and contributors must be registered voters in the district.
